In 2005, Stuart Dean was contracted by the South Station Bus Terminal’s management firm, The Codman Company, to perform a one-time restoration of the building’s façade. Years of train exhaust had formed severe diesel deposits on fascia panels directly above train tracks. Though the panels had been treated with high-performance coating, they were past due for a major cleaning. |
| Challenge: |
The South Station Bus Terminal operates nearly twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. So as not to interfere with the building’s bustling schedule, Stuart Dean’s façade restoration technicians cleaned the panels by working above the adjacent train tracks between midnight and 5:00AM. |
| Work Completed: |
Clean with 100% cotton towels and Simple Green. We were to recapture all effluent. No rundown was to drip off the wall panels and contact the tracks below. This was a basic cleaning job. The trick was in the access (Safeworks set up a special davit system and we worked off their supplied rigging between the hours of Midnight and 4 a.m. Work was done in less than 2 working weeks. There were about 5 or 6 drops and we had 3 or 4 mechanics on the staging. |
| Results: |
The black soot buildup was completely removed, eliminating an eyesore familiar to millions of Boston commuters. Stuart Dean has already been asked to perform a follow-up cleaning. |

Stuart Dean refinished our soot and grime plagued Alpolic fascia panels above the railroad tracks leading into South Station.
