Care and Maintenance of Refinished Wood

Stuart Dean recommends the following easy steps for cleaning wood that has been coated with a clear, protective finish,
  • Remove contaminants from the surface as soon as they are discovered, ideally before they dry. Be careful not to scratch, dent or breach the protective finish of the wood surface.
  • We recommend Murphys Oil Soap, diluted properly per the manufacturers instructions. Do not use penetrating oils, waxes, scratch concealing liquids, or silicone-based products. Never spray premixed cleaners directly onto wood surfaces. Discoloration, chips, dents, scratches or a change in the sheen of the protective clear coating indicate that refinishing and refurbishing of the protective coating may be required. High-traffic areas require refinishing more frequently.
  • Use only a clean, soft, damp cloth, moistened with a mild warm solution of an oil soap and clean water, to wipe away smudges or fingerprints. Always follow the direction of the wood grain, and do not allow the cleaning solution to dry. Remove excess liquid with a soft cloth. Finish by immediately dry buffing with a soft, clean, dry cloth in the direction of the wood grain.
  • Do not use any products containing ammonia, solvents, or abrasives on refinished wood. Use of these products can significantly diminish the life and benefits of the wood coating and possibly cause damage to the wood.
