Architectural Façade & Curtain Wall

Viewing facades of buildings looking skyward The façade of a building is the structure’s introduction to the world. It’s the first thing others see as they approach a building, but it’s usually the last thing to be properly maintained. Typically consisting of metal, glass, and stone, the façade or “curtain wall" in architectural terms, functions as the long-term weather barrier that protects the people and property within its enclosure. Its design and appearance also makes an image statement to the community in which it resides.

All too often, building façades are neglected. As a result, surfaces meant to be bright and shiny become dull and weathered by an array of harmful elements, including:

  • Water (acid rain, fog)
  • Hot and cold cycles (thermal stress)
  • Sunlight (ultraviolet radiation bleaches and burns)
  • Wind (blasting and abrading degrades surfaces)
  • Chemicals (including pollutants, pesky birds, and damaging cleaning compounds)

Glass and metal have been the most popular building façade materials in the past half-century. Although both are durable, they are surprisingly susceptible to deterioration from environmental forces and deferred maintenance. Just like cars, building façades need regular cleaning in order to remove damaging compounds and look their best.

Stuart Dean’s Specialty Services Division focuses on the restoration of architectural metal of curtain wall and building façade. We employ experts in the application of field-applied fluoropolymers and other high-performance coatings.

The Special Services Group of Stuart Dean has involvement with The Society for Protective Coatings (SSPC), National Association of Corrosion Engineers (NACE), the American Institute of Architects (AIA), and Construction Specification Institute (CSI), which provide us with expertise in coating performance and substrate conditions, allowing us to stay on the forefront of new technologies and methodologies to protect metal architectural surfaces.

Stuart Dean maintains a 10,000 square foot National Training Facility in Cleveland, Ohio, which is consistently utilized by Stuart Dean applicators across the country for training and certification as High-Performance Coating application specialists. Certifications are granted in conjunction with top coating manufacturers, which enable our technicians to be certified by numerous coating companies. This allows Stuart Dean to offer field-applied coating warranties atypical of the industry standard.
